How did Michael Jackson practice dance moves?

Michael Jackson was a total perfectionist when it came to his dance moves. One of the choreographers that worked with him on the Smooth Criminal short film said that Jackson would spend hours in front of the mirror, practicing every move hundreds of times.
He was also very open to working with many good choreographers. He was always open to new ideas and always wanted to “wow” his audience with moves that had never been seen before.
He had been known to practice his dancing in his home studios until he actually would collapse onto the floor in total exhaustion. He would purposely fast on Sundays to test the stamina of his body without food.

Jackson is also famous for talking about how important it was for a dancer to stop thinking when they danced. “If you're in your head you're dead” was a common phrase. Michael stated that he would just let his body become the music, each instrument evoking different movements.

Based on various interviews, videos and reports, following are major points relevant to question asked:

1. Michael Jackson said he used to fast on Sunday & dance, putting on dance music, (not usually his own). In these sessions, he perfected moves till he never had to think about it again, created new innovative moves, which he later incorporated into his various routines & practiced old ones.

2. For any music video, he often used to have rehearsals with choreographers & other professional dancers, often designing the moves in brainstorming sessions to better suit his song & unique style of dancing. And then practicing these to perfection.

3. For concerts, choreographers used to train the backup dancers & then, Michael used to have couple of rehearsals with trained dancers on stage, just to check sync & feasibility of moves. It all was followed by last preparatory "Dress" rehearsal. He was fully involved in creative process & oversaw every operation, from initial conception to choreography to other related aspects.

Michael had said, "People tend to see the outcome; they seldom see the hardwork that goes in background to produce that outcome. There's no substitute for hardwork". It is easy to say Michael had immense talent & was gifted. True as it may be, it'd be grossly false to attribute just innate talent for tremendous ground breaking creativity. Hard work played an equally important part.

In Michael Jackson's own poetic words,

“Consciousness expresses itself through creation. This world we live in is the dance of the creator. Dancers come and go in the twinkling of an eye but the dance lives on. On many an occasion when I am dancing, I have felt touched by something sacred. In those moments, I felt my spirit soar and become one with everything that exists.

I become the stars and the moon. I become the lover and the beloved. I become thevictor and the vanquished. I become the master and the slave. I become the singer and the song. I become the knower and the known. I keep on dancing then it is the eternal

dance or creation. The creator and creation merge into one wholeness of joy. I keep on dancing...and dancing...and dancing. Until there is only...the dance.”
